Is taking antioxidants the best way to ward off disease?

Antioxidants help fight the ravages of time (normal wear and tear on the body) and the effects of toxins (tobacco, pollution) on the cells. They can be very beneficial, but in the wrong situation, every antioxidant can become a pro-oxidant, creating free radicals and causing damage. In some cases, they can keep the body from activating its own natural response system and even feed the enemy. For example, ROS (reactive oxygen species) kill cancer cells; certain antioxidants can block them and even keep medications from working.

Antioxidants are a complex subject, and (as with any supplement) you should consider the benefit-to-risk factor. Throughout this book, I will give information on antioxidants that are commonly recommended for certain conditions. This information, as well as personal research on the benefits of taking an antioxidant and an honest discussion with your doctor, should be taken into account before popping any pill.
